35 YEARS YOUNG -- JULY 2007In 1888, E. M. Hughes of Albany, N.Y.
brought the first Belgian Hares
to America. Shortly after importing the Belgian Hares from the UK,
breeders formed the "AMERICAN BELGIAN
HARE ASSOCIATION". With wide scattered membership the club
lasted not much more then a year. In 1897 the "NATIONAL BELGIAN HARE
CLUB OF AMERICA" was
formed. Twelve years after the formation of the National Belgian
Hare Club of America, and as additional breeds were introduced in the
US, a new "all-breed" club , the "NATIONAL PET STOCK ASSOCIATION"
was formed. After several name changes, the National Pet Stock
Association became the AMERICAN
RABBIT BREEDERS ASSOCIATION. As years passed the National
Belgian Hare club of America also passed from existence. In June of
1972, a group of Belgian Hare breeders gathered together to apply for a
specialty club charter from the American Rabbit Breeders Association to
replace the National Belgian Hare Club of America. In July of 1972 the
charter was granted and our present club, the "AMERICAN BELGIAN HARE
CLUB" was
established.

From August 1 2010 thru August 31 2010, the Rare Breed Rabbits Group is conducting a census of Belgian Hares.
Hare breeders in the USA and Canada are invited to send in rabbit
counts.You do not have to be a member of any club to participate in
this survey. Belgian Hares are one of the rarest breeds
recognized by ARBA ( American Rabbit Breeders Association ) They are
rated as "THREATENED" by the
American Livestock Breeds Conservancy, meaning a possiblity of
extinction. If you are a member of a Yahoo group you may receive
notification of this survey. PLEASE DO NOT POST YOUR COUNTS ON YAHOO GROUPS, SEND YOUR COUNTS BY PRIVATE E-MAIL TO FRANCO RIOS AT francorios2000@yahoo.comPlease indicate how many WEANED rabbits you have today, including how many bucks and does. Please count only rabbits that are no longer nursing. A doe with a litter under her counts as 1 doe, don't count the litter. So count the adult rabbits and any weaned juniors. Send your counts only once this year. The count is intended to be a snapshot of the population for the year.

2011 American Belgian Hare Nationals will be held in Canton, Ohio. It will be held on the third Saturday in May along with a Speciality show. On Sunday, Stark Co. will hold an all breed double show. That gives you four times to show your Hares in one weekend. Start making plans now to attend. Raffle items are always welcome. We are making plans for dinner on Saturday evening, we will let you know when we have all the details. Motel 6 on Sunset Strip has always been a good place to stay for Nationals. Pets are OK. We will be posting hotels and prices as we get them.
